My BGSU blogs are not working right now so I am using this as an alternative if I cannot get it working before my class.
The book I have chosen to make a poster for is called The Flat Man by Rose Impey and illustrated by Moria Kemp. It was one of my absolute favorite books as a child along with the other few books written by the same author and illustrated by the same person.
Here is a link to its Amazon page
I always identified with the kids in all of her books but especially The Flat Man. I myself used to think that if I didn't go to sleep in a timely manner batman would take matters into his own hands.
The story follows a little boy who likes scaring himself to sleep pretending there is a flat creature that gets into his room through a crack in his window. It hides in the shadows and creeps into his bed and tangles itself up around him. Its only weakness is light which the little boy remembers just as the flat man is getting to him. He fights back and wins at the end of the book, concurring all fears, only to start scaring himself again with the hanging dragon in his room. It is actually another Rose Impey book.
The story always made me feel like whenever I was scared I could just stand up and fight back rather then just accept being frightened. I never had trouble sleeping, I just liked to stay up reading books. For this project I am going to use the concept of the assertiveness of the little boy and his ability to concur his fears in the poster. I tried many ideas before settling on the first half size sketch there. Here are all my sketches.
I am going to use scanned images from the book in place of my drawings. Im the book everything has a purple coloring to it but I think I am going to take things much darker.
